Kutaisi Airport to Gudauri 2026: 4 h, Shuttle, Transfer, Car
Kutaisi airport to Gudauri: 309-310 km, about 4 h by road. A 30 GEL coach to Tbilisi and a marshrutka, a transfer timed to your flight, the winter bus.
From Kutaisi airport to Gudauri it’s 309-310 km, a little over four hours by car (two route planners running on OpenStreetMap data, checked 24 October 2026): the road skirts central Tbilisi on the Mtskheta side, so a private transfer takes the same time. The public-transport chain is longer: a Georgian Bus coach drops you at Station Square in the middle of the capital, then it’s the metro to Didube and a marshrutka, at least seven hours by daylight, and after a night flight you also wait for the morning. The operator lists a direct winter bus from the airport to Gudauri, but its 2026/27 timetable hasn’t been published, so no tickets are on sale yet. If you’re landing in Kutaisi on a low-cost flight with skis, what decides it is when you land, how many of you there are and how the skis are packed.
Why four hours, not six: the road skirts central Tbilisi
It’s tempting to add the two familiar legs, airport to Tbilisi and Tbilisi to Gudauri. The road doesn’t work that way. Both route planners (OSRM and Valhalla, running on OpenStreetMap data, checked 24 October 2026) take the S1 (E60) to the junction at Mtskheta without entering the centre of the capital, then the S3 north through Pasanauri to the resort.
| From | To Gudauri | By road |
|---|---|---|
| Kutaisi centre | 287 km | about 4 h (OSRM 4 h 07 min, Valhalla 3 h 46 min) |
| Kutaisi airport (KUT) | 309-310 km | 4 h 12 min (Valhalla) - 4 h 21 min (OSRM) |
Kiwitaxi’s route page counts 320 km and about 4 h 20 min, the partner’s own calculation, 10 km longer than the route planners. The planners don’t allow for snow, queues or stops. In winter the drive along the Georgian Military Road takes longer, and closures, convoys and the winter-tyre law are covered on the Tbilisi to Gudauri page.
A private car doesn’t enter the centre of Tbilisi, while Georgian Bus coaches do: their terminus is Station Square. So on this route a transfer beats public transport by several hours.
The direct winter bus: what’s known on 24 October 2026
Georgian Bus’s help page has an entry on how to get from Kutaisi airport to Gudauri. The operator says it runs a seasonal route between Gudauri and the airport in both directions, boarding in Gudauri is next to the Smart supermarket, and it operates only while the winter schedule is active. The terms of carriage list the same two routes as running “during the winter season”. By its own description Georgian Bus has been a Wizz Air partner in Georgia since 2014 and times airport departures to arrivals.
On 24 October 2026 you can’t buy a ticket for this route. The booking system has no city called Gudauri, and the airport to Tbilisi timetable is loaded only up to 30 November 2026: the winter schedule hasn’t been published yet. The operator’s answer on the season dates is “check the website”. So look at georgianbus.com closer to December 2026, and don’t buy a flight counting on this bus: keep the transfer from the next sections as a fallback. The lift opening date is on the Gudauri page, along with the date it was checked.
Don’t expect the four hours a car takes. The operator doesn’t give a journey time for this route yet. Travellers who took it in earlier winters (wander-lush, Kutaisi airport guide updated 20 September 2026) describe about six hours and a change from a big coach into a minivan before Tbilisi. Treat that blog figure as a ballpark; the price and the timetable come from the operator.
Georgian Bus rules are the same on all its routes (terms of carriage and help page, checked 24 October 2026), and it’s better to know them in advance:
- be at the stop 20 minutes before departure; the coach isn’t obliged to wait for latecomers;
- online sales close 2 hours before departure; after that you can buy on board or at the Georgian Bus desk in the airport if seats remain;
- if your flight is delayed, the ticket is valid for the adjusted departure, but you may get a different seat;
- one travel bag and one backpack are included, an extra piece costs 25 GEL (about €8.60 or $9.60);
- skis aren’t mentioned on the help page or in the terms, so call the hotline (+995 32 2 80 60 60) before paying and ask whether a ski bag counts as an extra piece.
A coach to Tbilisi plus a marshrutka: the cheap chain that eats a day
This chain wins on money and loses on stamina. Georgian Bus runs from the airport to Tbilisi, stopping at Station Square on the Tsotne Dadiani Street side. In the booking system on 24 October 2026 a one-way adult ticket costs 30 GEL (about €10 or $11.50), a child’s (ages 2 to 12) costs 20 GEL, and the ride takes 4 hours including a 20-minute stop. Departures are tied to flights: in the autumn timetable checked on 24 October 2026, six to nine coaches leave every day, one to three of them at night between 01:00 and 05:00 and the rest between late morning and midnight. The winter timetable may differ. The airport itself states on its site that there are no restrictions on night flights.
Then come two changes. From Station Square to Didube it’s three stops on the Akhmeteli-Varketili metro line, and the marshrutkas to Gudauri leave from Didube. They leave when a van fills up and the departure times are rough guides; how it works, when to board and what to pay are on the Tbilisi to Gudauri page. For the total, two ballpark figures from that page are enough: about 15 GEL and 2.5-3 hours.
The total looks like this: 4 hours on the coach, a change with a wait (a marshrutka driver leaves when the van fills up, so the usual advice is to arrive 30-40 minutes early) and 2.5-3 hours in the marshrutka, at least seven hours by day. After a night flight you reach Tbilisi at dawn and wait for the morning, and the wander-lush guide advises not to ride marshrutkas after dark at all. In money that’s 30 GEL plus about 15 GEL: roughly 45 GEL, or about €15 a head.
By day there’s a train option. The fast Stadler stops at Kopitnari, by the airport: the airport’s site says the station is 1.8 km away and free shuttles carry passengers. The timings and caveats are on the Tbilisi to Kutaisi page. The rail leg is shorter than the coach ride, but the train runs to its own timetable, not to your flight, and you still have Didube and the marshrutka ahead of you.
A transfer timed to your flight, with skis on the booking
A private transfer follows the road route: from the arrivals hall to your hotel in Gudauri without changes, a little over 4 hours by the route planners. Kiwitaxi (our partner; the airport to Gudauri route page, listing for 24 October 2026) sells it per car, not per person. The route block says “From $267”, and that was the cheapest car in the class list for the same date: a minivan for 4 cost $267, a Comfort sedan $289, a 7-seat minibus $350, and Premium Minibus and Business $494 each. The questions section further down quotes “from $224” as an entry price, but the class list for that date showed no car at that price. The partner warns that on holidays and big events the price may rise, so for New Year dates expect different figures.
Split the car and it looks like this: four people in a minivan pay about $67 each, seven in a minibus $50. Two people pay about $134 each for the same minivan. Kiwitaxi isn’t the cheapest seller of this ride: GoTrip, a marketplace of local drivers, listed sedans for three from 331 GEL (about $127) per car on 24 October 2026, about $64 each for two, but those cars take 2-3 bags, so ask about ski bags before you book. Even so, the chain from the previous section is several times cheaper. The transfer wins on time: four hours instead of seven-plus.
What matters for skiers:
- Class. On the page a Comfort sedan takes 4 passengers and 3 bags, while the 4-seat minivan takes 4 bags and the note “fits irregular luggage”. A party of four with ski bags takes the minivan, not the sedan.
- Order comment. The page names skis separately among non-standard luggage and asks you to state it when booking; standard luggage is anything whose three sides add up to no more than 158 cm.
- Lead time. Standard classes must be booked at least 16 hours before the trip, Premium and minibuses for 10 or more at least 24 hours.
- Waiting. For an airport pick-up the price includes 1 hour 30 minutes after the scheduled arrival. For a night flight with a passport-control queue that’s a cushion, but if the driver waits longer, he may ask for an extra fee.
- Winter tyres. The law is described on the Tbilisi to Gudauri page; write “winter tyres” in the order comment and ask for confirmation.
There are other ways to arrange it. Georgian Bus does private transfers on request: the route, time and price are agreed by e-mail in advance. At the arrivals hall there’s a taxi desk, Bene Exclusive (round the clock, per the airport); fix the price to Gudauri before you get in, not on the road.
Driving yourself after a night flight
Localrent (a partner; the Kutaisi page, checked 24 October 2026) lets you collect a car at the airport, at an office or at an address, and it says plainly about winter: winter tyres and equipment are required, and it offers cars with ski and snowboard racks. The general rules for renting at the airport are in the guide to car rental in Kutaisi.
What decides this one is tiredness. After a flight and a sleepless night, four hours behind the wheel on a road that has snow in winter is a poor start to a holiday. If your plane lands at night, it’s wiser to split the journey: sleep in Kutaisi (about 30 minutes by car from the airport to the centre, per Localrent), pick the car up in the morning and set off in daylight. If you do take the car at the airport at night, ask the rental company whether it hands cars out at your hour and whether winter tyres are fitted.
A word on the way back. From Gudauri to Tbilisi it’s about 120 km and 2-2.5 hours, to Kutaisi airport more than 300 km. If your airline also flies from Tbilisi, an open-jaw ticket, into Kutaisi and out of Tbilisi, removes the second long drive, but check in advance what the rental company charges for returning the car in another city.
Skis on the plane
Wizz Air’s rule (the sports-equipment page, checked 24 October 2026): one set per passenger for an extra fee, no more than 149 x 119 x 171 cm and 32 kg, skis and snowboards in a pouch. Add it when you book (later is possible in your profile, up to 3 hours before departure), because places per flight are limited. The page shows no fee, so check it in the basket for your flight. Other airlines set their own rules, so read theirs before you book.
Which option fits whom
- Night arrival with skis: a transfer. In the 4-seat minivan flagged “fits irregular luggage” that’s about $67 each for four or $134 each for two (Kiwitaxi, prices on 24 October 2026), and you don’t spend the wait until dawn at Station Square.
- A group of six or seven: the 7-seat minibus, about $50 each for seven (Kiwitaxi, 24 October 2026).
- Solo or a couple, landing by day, budget first: the coach to Tbilisi, the metro to Didube and a marshrutka, roughly 45 GEL (about €15) a head and at least seven hours. The coach alone takes 4 hours, so off a midday flight you reach Didube late in the afternoon, and in December-February the marshrutka would climb to Gudauri after dark: sleep in Tbilisi and take it in the morning.
- Your own car: after a night flight, sleep in Kutaisi and set off in the morning on winter tyres.
- The direct Georgian Bus winter coach: don’t plan around it until the operator publishes the timetable.
If you haven’t bought the ticket yet
The real choice comes earlier than it seems: it’s the airport you fly into. From Tbilisi to Gudauri it’s about 120 km and 2-2.5 hours, from Kutaisi a little over four. The difference on the road is about two hours each way. Compare it with the fare difference on your own dates: fares change every day, so it’s worth doing the sum when you book. If Kutaisi wins, take it together with a fallback for the road: a transfer for a night flight, the chain by day, and treat the direct winter bus as a bonus for when the operator publishes its timetable. For the choice of resort as a whole see Gudauri and Bakuriani, and for the other routes from the airport see Kutaisi airport.
