Mandatory health insurance to enter Georgia from 2026

Updated · June 15, 2026

From 1 January 2026 health insurance is mandatory for tourists in Georgia: coverage from 30,000 GEL, a 300 GEL fine if you have none. What to know.

From 1 January 2026, health insurance became mandatory for foreign tourists entering Georgia. Previously a policy was only a recommendation — now it’s a formal requirement, and without one you may be refused entry at the border.

The key parameters under the current rules:

  • minimum coverage of at least 30,000 GEL, for the whole length of the trip (from entry to exit);
  • a 300 GEL fine for not having a policy, plus the risk of being refused entry;
  • the policy should be issued in English or Georgian — that makes it easier to check at the border.

The legal basis is Resolution of the Government of Georgia No. 602 of 26.12.2025 (under the Law “On Tourism”, art. 12). This is a regulatory requirement, and the details (the wording, the amounts, how checks are carried out) may change. Be sure to confirm what’s current before your trip on the official resource of Georgia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (geoconsul.gov.ge), and arrange a policy in advance rather than counting on “topping up on arrival”.

How to choose a policy that meets this requirement, which services such as SafetyWing suit travellers from different countries, and what else to keep in mind — we cover it all in the insurance section.

And if you plan to travel around the country by car, check the deposit, insurance and cross-border rules in advance in the car rental section.
