Georgia Entry 2026: Visa-Free 1 Year, Russians & Ukrainians
Do Russians and Ukrainians need a visa for Georgia in 2026? No - up to 1 year visa-free. New insurance rule, passport, Verkhny Lars, checklist.
Russian and Ukrainian citizens usually do not need a visa to travel to Georgia in 2026: both countries are on the Georgian MFA’s visa-free list, and the standard stay is up to 365 days. But that does not mean entry is “just turn up and cross”. From 1 January 2026, a tourist needs medical and accident insurance with coverage of at least 30,000 GEL, the passport must be valid for the whole trip, and the land route through Verkhny Lars depends on road conditions and queues. This article does not repeat the general Georgia visa guide; it is a narrow checklist for Russians and Ukrainians: citizenship, documents, insurance, Lars, money and common border-control questions.
Checked on 25.06.2026. This is general information, not legal advice. Visa-free lists, insurance requirements and border-control practice can change without a long transition period. Before departure, verify your own case on geoconsul.gov.ge, matsne.gov.ge, rs.ge and with your carrier or insurer.
Quick Checklist: What You Need on Entry
If you are a Russian or Ukrainian citizen entering as a tourist, the basic set is:
| What to prepare | Russians | Ukrainians |
|---|---|---|
| Visa | usually not required, visa-free up to 365 days | usually not required, visa-free up to 365 days |
| Passport | valid international passport | valid international passport |
| Medical insurance | required from 01.01.2026, coverage ≥30,000 GEL | required from 01.01.2026, coverage ≥30,000 GEL |
| Accommodation / return ticket | not always asked, but useful to have | not always asked, but useful to have |
| Cash over 30,000 GEL | declare it | declare it |
A border officer may ask about the purpose of your trip, the address of your first night, your route and sufficient funds. Often it is a formality, but it is not the place to argue: keep documents offline on your phone and in email, and keep the insurance as a separate PDF or screenshot. If you fly, read the overview of Georgia’s airports and how to get from Tbilisi Airport. If you come by land, check the road status, especially on the Gudauri - Kobi - Dariali section.
Visa-Free Stay: 365 Days, Not Forever
Georgia’s main advantage for Russians and Ukrainians is the long visa-free period. According to Georgia’s official consular portal, citizens of countries on the visa-free list may stay in the country for up to 365 days. Which nationalities get exactly how long is set out in the visa-free stays by nationality table. That covers a regular holiday, a winter stay, a long remote-work period and a “let’s see whether I want to live in Georgia” trip. But visa-free entry is not a residence permit: if you plan to stay long-term, work for a Georgian company, apply for a status or buy property, move to the relocation section and check the separate rules.
The period is counted by actual presence. After leaving and re-entering, the period usually starts again, but “visa runs” are not a guarantee. Border control may ask additional questions if someone lives in the country for months and regularly exits for a short time. For a trip of a few weeks this is not an issue; for living “for years on visa-free entry”, it is better to think through a legal status in advance. Exactly how the period is counted and what a “visa run” means is covered in a separate piece, how long you can live in Georgia visa-free. The full general explanation of who needs a visa and how the 365-day stay works remains in the canonical article Georgia visa: do you need one and how to enter.
Documents for Russian Citizens
A Russian citizen needs a valid international passport to enter Georgia. The internal Russian passport is not accepted for entry into Georgia. Georgia’s visa-free regime does not set a universal “six months beyond the trip” rule, but a buffer is safer: the passport should cover the whole stay, and your airline or transit country may apply its own document rules.
If you travel through Verkhny Lars, check the documents for the Russian side of the route separately: the car, power of attorney, insurance, driving licence and child-travel rules. On the Georgian side, the same things matter as at the airport: passport, purpose of trip, address, insurance and no problematic stamps. A separate risk is travel to Abkhazia and South Ossetia through points not controlled by Georgia. Georgia treats such crossings as illegal; if your passport shows evidence of a disputed entry, it can create serious problems at the border.
Documents for Ukrainian Citizens
Ukrainian citizens also usually have visa-free access for up to 365 days. Prepare a valid international passport and do not rely on an internal passport or ID card unless you have fresh official confirmation for your exact route. Airlines may have their own boarding-document requirements, so check both Georgian rules and the carrier’s conditions.
Choose insurance particularly carefully. Some international services do not work with Ukrainian citizens or limit coverage because of sanctions or compliance rules; in that case compare available alternatives and check that the policy covers Georgia, the whole trip and the minimum 30,000 GEL limit. The general principles of choosing a policy, exclusions and active leisure are covered in how to choose travel insurance for Georgia, while the 2026 entry rule itself is explained in mandatory travel insurance for Georgia entry.
Verkhny Lars: When a Land Entry Makes Sense
Verkhny Lars is the main overland scenario for Russians: on the Russian side it is the Verkhny Lars checkpoint; on the Georgian side it is Dariali/Kazbegi. The route follows the Georgian Military Road through a high mountain section, so it is sensitive to snow, avalanche risk, repairs, freight traffic and seasonal queues. In summer and on holidays, build in a time buffer; in winter and spring, check restrictions before departure, not when you are already at the barrier.
The practical minimum for Lars:
- check road status with the Roads Department of Georgia and current road updates;
- keep insurance and documents offline - mobile internet in the gorge can be unstable;
- do not plan an important flight from Tbilisi on the same day after crossing;
- decide in advance where you will sleep if delayed: Stepantsminda, Vladikavkaz or Tbilisi;
- if you drive, verify car-insurance and power-of-attorney rules.
If it is your first trip through Kazbegi, read the Tbilisi - Kazbegi route and the general transport section. For travelling around Georgia after the border, decide early whether you need a car: rental rules and deposits are covered in car rental.
2026 Insurance: What to Check Before Travel
From 1 January 2026, a tourist must hold medical and accident coverage for the whole stay in Georgia, with a minimum of 30,000 GEL. Resolution No. 602 allows an electronic or paper policy issued by a Georgian or foreign insurance company; the document should be in Georgian or English. The covered territory, start and end dates, insured risks and limits must be clear in the policy.
Do not buy a policy “only to pass the border”. Georgia means mountains, serpentine roads, trekking, skiing, rafting, car trips and possible evacuation. Basic insurance often excludes active leisure, alcohol, chronic conditions or late pregnancy. If you plan Kazbegi, Svaneti, Gudauri, Tusheti or a long road trip, choose coverage with a buffer and the right add-ons. The detailed breakdown of sums and wording is in mandatory travel insurance for Georgia entry 2026.
Money, Luggage and Disputed Routes
You may bring any amount of money into Georgia, but cash, cheques and securities worth more than 30,000 GEL or the equivalent must be declared to customs. Keep the declaration until departure: if you take out more than you declared on entry, you may be asked to prove the origin of the money. For a normal holiday, a bank card plus a small reserve of cash lari is enough; daily costs and trip budgeting are covered in how much a trip to Georgia costs.
Do not try to enter Georgia from Russia through Abkhazia or South Ossetia. Official foreign travel advisories warn separately that Georgia does not recognise those crossings, and entry through them may be treated as illegal. Safe tourist scenarios are international airports, official land crossings with Turkey/Armenia/Azerbaijan, and the Verkhny Lars - Dariali route when the road is open.
Pre-Departure Checklist
Two or three days before travel, check:
- your international passport is valid for the whole stay and meets the carrier’s requirements;
- Russian/Ukrainian citizenship is still covered by the visa-free list on geoconsul.gov.ge;
- insurance runs from entry date to exit date, coverage is at least 30,000 GEL, and the language is English or Georgian;
- the policy PDF, accommodation booking and return/onward ticket are saved offline;
- if using Verkhny Lars, the road, weather and backup overnight plan are checked;
- cash over 30,000 GEL is ready to be declared;
- the route does not enter through points Georgia does not recognise.
If your scenario is standard - a holiday, winter stay or visiting friends - the rules are simple: visa-free stay up to 365 days, passport, insurance and an official entry point. The rest depends on the route. Once the border is sorted, everything else - budget, transport, a SIM, lodging and the route - is strung into one chain in the full step-by-step plan for an independent trip. Keep the canonical visa guide for the general context, insurance 2026 for the policy, and then continue with the best time to visit Georgia and routes around the country.
