Stepantsminda (Kazbegi): Gergeti and Mount Kazbek

Stepantsminda (formerly Kazbegi) is a small mountain town at about 1,740 metres in the Khevi region, at the end of the Georgian Military Road, roughly 157 km north of Tbilisi. Above it rises snow-capped Mount Kazbek, and on a hill stands the Gergeti church - the most recognisable view in Georgia. For most people it’s a base for short hikes through the valleys of the Greater Caucasus.

Mount Kazbek and the Gergeti church

Above the town rises Mount Kazbek (in Georgian, Mkinvartsveri - “ice peak”), an extinct volcano over 5,000 metres high - one of the highest mountains in the Caucasus. Against its backdrop, on a separate hill, stands the 14th-century Gergeti Trinity Church - it’s for this view that people come here.

You can walk up to the church (a steep trail of about 1.5-2 hours) or drive up in an off-road vehicle. Kazbek itself is often hidden in cloud, so it’s worth allowing some extra time for clear weather.

The Georgian Military Road

The road to Stepantsminda is half the experience. The Georgian Military Road runs from Tbilisi through Ananuri fortress, the ski resort of Gudauri and the Jvari Pass. Above Gudauri stands the bright mosaic Friendship of Peoples arch, with a view over the Devil’s Valley.

Around: valleys and waterfalls

Stepantsminda is an excellent base for hikes. Nearby are the Gveleti waterfall and the Darial Gorge to the north, and to the east opens the alpine Juta valley beneath the rocky Chaukhi massif: one of the most beautiful places in Khevi and a popular day hike. What to keep in mind

Stepantsminda is already high country (1,740 m), so it’s cooler here than down below and the weather is changeable. Kazbek is often hidden by cloud - if you can, stay the night to catch a clear morning. In winter the Jvari Pass on the Georgian Military Road is sometimes closed because of snow and avalanches - check the forecast and the road conditions in advance.

Stepantsminda is easy to combine with stops along the Georgian Military Road - the Ananuri fortress and Gudauri. Most people come here from Tbilisi for a day or with an overnight stay.
